More than 9,300 stores closed this year, up 63 percent from 2018 - NBCNews.com

A record number of retail stores closed this year, capping off a decade of dramatic changes to consumer preferences as a result of online shopping that roiled the industry.

Retailers announced more than 9,300 store closures this year, a 63 percent increase from 2018, when more than 5,700 stores closed, according to Coresight Research, a global advisory and research firm specializing in retail and technology. The last record year came in 2017, when more than 8,000 stores shuttered.

But some retail analysts say the industry was due for trimming after a decadeslong mall boom that followed consumers into the suburbs. After World War II, the economy heated up and consumers left urban areas to buy new homes in the suburbs. Retail developers quickly followed by opening up a new mall every year. At their peak, 19 new malls opened in 1990.

Not every retailer needs 100 stores. It’s about the industry right-sizing, rather than about a retail apocalypse.”

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

“Even without the advent of online, there would be this reckoning,” Michael Brown, a retail practice partner with the global management consulting firm A.T. Kearny, told NBC News. “What online has done is make it really expensive to continue operating a large store base, and with a competitive online experience there had to be a rationalization for the number of stores and the role they played.”

This year's record number of store closures has touched nearly every part of the retail industry, from apparel to toys, and was driven in part by a slew of company bankruptcies. For many of these companies, bankruptcy and store closures are an opportunity to right size their store footprints and shed expensive real estate.

Payless ShoeSource filed for bankruptcy in February for the second time and shut down all 2,500 of its North American stores. The company struggled with massive debt and said supplier delays forced it to sell its inventory at deep discounts. Teen retailer Charlotte Russe also filed for bankruptcy, and said it would close 94 stores. North American fashion house YM bought the company in March and plans to relaunch 100 new locations across the country. Barneys New York plans to close 15 out of its 22 stores as part of its bankruptcy. Its new owner, Authentic Brands, plans to open a pop-up shop in the summer of 2020 on Madison Avenue in New York City to give the company “an opportunity to attract a new customer that they don’t necessarily have today,” said Jamie Salter, CEO of Authentic Brands.

Other companies closed their stores completely in 2019. Payless ShoeSource filed for bankruptcy in February for the second time and shut down all 2,500 of its North American locations. The company struggled with massive debt and said supplier delays forced it to sell its inventory at deep discounts. Accessories chain Charming Charlie filed for bankruptcy in July and said it will close 261 of its stores by the end of August. The company said it wasn’t able to come up with a long-term profitability strategy.

While fewer shoppers are heading into stores to shop, their sales are becoming more valuable, Lauren Bitar, a retail consultant with the analytics firm RetailNext, told NBC News. Between January and December 20, retail store traffic was down by about 5 percent and net sales were down by around 2 percent, according to RetailNext. But the average transaction amount increased by nearly 3 percent and the sales value per shopper increased by about 3 percent.

This trend is in part because more shoppers are researching products online and then buying them in store. That, in turn, has meant brands are investing in their staff, in order to improve the customer experience. Many companies have started increasing wages and adding health benefits to bring in top sales talent.

“Store staff has really been a commodity in the past — they lost the ability to engage with consumers,” said Brown. “But as wages go up retailers are really going to need to invest in staff in stores to be more productive and to be additive to what a consumer is buying.”

Heading into 2020, the retail industry is expected to shed more real estate. Online sales are expected to rise to 25 percent from 16 percent by 2026, according to UBS. That means roughly 75,000 more retail stores would need to close. But that doesn’t mean stores are now obsolete.

“It’s really having the right number — not every retailer needs 100 stores,” said Bitar with RetailNext. “It’s about the industry right-sizing, rather than about a retail apocalypse.”

The demise of brick-and-mortar retail is about more than Amazon - Yahoo Finance

From riches to rags, the last decade has not been kind to the retail industry. Toys ‘R’ Us, RadioShack, Payless Shoes are just a few of the names which have fallen victim to global e-commerce, with a lot more expected to die heading into the 2020s.

“I think it's been a bit of a double-edged sword,” Michael Brown, a partner at A.T. Kearney, told Yahoo Finance’s On the Move. “E-commerce has really come and changed the way consumers shop, but it's actually been just the transition that we've seen in retail over the years.”

A lot of this evolution is attributable Amazon (AMZN), the leading online marketplace in the U.S. But the challenges brought by e-commerce disruption are a bit more nuanced, Brown said.

“Online sales are 10% of all retail sales. Amazon is about 50% of that,” Kearney noted. “So it's not only Amazon. I think the other phenomenon people overlook is fragmentation. If you look at all the online digitally native companies, they're taking a percentage here, a percentage there from all the big retailers. And when 20 or 30 of them take a percentage point away from you, you just lost all your profit margin, and that's a challenge.”

In other words, while Amazon might offer great deals, other online retailers may offer even better deals for certain products. And so the competition among online retailers is only intensifying the pressure on brick-and-mortar retailers to cut prices.

A Payless ShoeSource store is seen in Orlando, Florida on February 17, 2019, the first day of the firm's liquidation sale after confirming on February 15, 2019 that it will close its 2,100 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.. (Photo by Paul Hennessy/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

This year has been a record for store closures. U.S. retailers announced plans to shut doors at more than 9,300 locations. That’s up 50% from 2018, according to Coresight. This year also included bankruptcy announcements from Sears, Forever 21 and Payless. Brown forecasts a transformation coming for some big name retailers. He predicts Macy’s (M) will transition to become more of a discount retailer in the next few years.

“Macy's is rapidly transitioning to being an off-price retailer, to be the next TJ Maxx (TJX) or Ross Stores (ROST) as they open up their backstage stores.” Brown said. “There's a rough time ahead for all the department stores. And the names like JCPenney (JCP), Sears, are on the forefront of that.”

While store closures are expected to continue, Brown expects online retailers will actually make their way to physical spaces over the next few years.

“Anyone who's been a digitally native retailer is going to have to have 300 to 400 stores to reach scale,” he said. “Shopping online is not an easy experience— the store is easier to shop.”

'Do Not Sell My Info': U.S. retailers rush to comply with California's new privacy law - Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. retailers including Walmart Inc will add “Do Not Sell My Info” links to their websites and signage in stores starting Jan. 1, allowing California shoppers to understand for the first time what personal and other data the retailers collect, sources said.

FILE PHOTO: Walmart's logo is seen outside one of the stores ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. November 27, 2019. REUTERS/Kamil Krzaczynski/File Photo

Others like Home Depot will allow shoppers not just in California but around the country to access such information online. At its California stores, Home Depot will add signage, offer QR codes so shoppers can look up information using their mobile devices and train store employees to answer questions.

Large U.S retailers are rushing to comply with a new law, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which becomes effective at the start of 2020 and is one of the most significant regulations overseeing the data collection practices of U.S. companies. It lets shoppers to opt out of allowing retailers and other companies to sell personal data to third parties.

In addition to retailers, the law affects a broad swath of firms including social media platforms such as Facebook and Alphabet’s Google, advertisers, app developers, mobile service providers and streaming TV services, and is likely to overhaul the way companies benefit from the use of personal information. The law follows Europe’s controversial General Data Protection Regulation, which set a new standard for how companies collect, store and use personal data. The European law gave companies years to comply while CCPA has given them a few months.

Draft regulations around the law were only released in October. Retailers did not anticipate having to add signs in their stores, which are required by the regulations but were not part of the original statute, and it is not an effective use of dollars, said Nicholas Ahrens, a vice president at the Retail Industry Leaders Association, who leads their tech policy.

A Walmart source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters the company is “working through a lot of ambiguities in the law, for example, the language around loyalty programs and if retail companies can offer them going forward.”

There is also lack of clarity on what constitutes “sale” of information, retail lobbyists and attorneys advising retailers said.

Walmart spokesman Dan Toporek said the retailer supports efforts that gives customers control of their information.

Home Depot spokeswoman Sara Gorman said the California law introduces new requirements but does not change the company’s “deliberate approach to customer data and privacy.”

Target spokeswoman Jessica Carlson said a “Do Not Sell” button on its website, will be visible to all U.S. shoppers and California residents will have access to information outlined under the new law. Target already allows its shoppers to opt out of sharing their information with third parties for marketing purposes, she said.

Amazon.com Inc is taking a different approach. We do not plan to put a “Do not sell” button on our website because Amazon is not in the business of selling customers’ personal data and it never has been,” a company spokeswoman said in a statement.

Amazon will launch a revised privacy notice and will review the final regulations to “understand what signage may be required to inform customers how to find the privacy notice” at its stores, the spokeswoman added.

DELETE MY DATA

Some national chains such as Sherwin-Williams, which sells paints and coatings,  have already begun adding links on their websites in California, Reuters has found. The company did not respond to requests for comment.

Both Walmart and Amazon have ramped up investments in drawing out “data maps” in the past few months, which lets them collate the extent of personal information collected by different business units, where and how this information is stored, what they do with it and who it is shared with, sources said.

A Walmart source said the company’s different business teams including technology, marketing, advertising, payments and security are investing resources in auditing and making decisions on how to respond to requests from customers to see their data or those who ask for it to be deleted.

An economic impact assessment prepared for the California Attorney General’s  office by an independent research firm found compliance with the regulations will cost businesses between $467 million and $16.5 billion between 2020 and 2030. Industry estimates peg initial compliance costs at over $50 billion.

Slideshow (2 Images)

The California Attorney General recently told Reuters in an interview that privacy law enforcement will look kindly on those that demonstrate an effort to comply.

But sources told Reuters they expect plaintiff attorneys to bring lawsuits in the new year against a range of businesses that may fail to meet the law’s requirements.

Many companies affected by the law have lobbied extensively for a federal privacy bill that might override the law in California. But their efforts have so far made little progress.

Retailers lost in the last decade: Toys R Us, Sports Authority, Blockbuster, Borders and Payless - USA TODAY

America lost a record number of household names in 2019 as store closings capped a tough decade of accelerating decline for the troubled retail industry.

No category was safe from the retail apocalypse that shuttered thousands of stores – not books, toys, clothing, shoes or electronics – as shoppers deserted malls for the ease of online shopping.

It's not just shoppers' habits that are hurting retailers. Heaps of debt, bruising competition from Amazon and crushing pressures to reduce their physical footprint forced a wave of closures, some after companies filed for bankruptcy.

The 2010s were cruel. Retailers shed thousands of stores in 2017, too, another record year of losses in the past decade.

Michael Brown, a partner in the retail practice of consulting firm A.T. Kearney who has studied the future of shopping centers, said the closings represented a changing of the guard.

“As we exit this decade, we’re really seeing the tidal wave of shift from physical to digital in many respects whether it’s physical to digital shopping or physical to digital products that are impacting what and how people are buying it,” Brown said.

Sears, Forever 21, Pier 1: These retailers are facing the fight for their lives in 2020

Store closings: Who are the biggest victims of the retail apocalypse

Now they're headed into a new decade saddled with fresh worries, from growing consumer debt to the trade dispute with China. A significant downturn isn't forecast for the industry, but chances are the pain won't let up anytime soon for some of America's struggling chains.

The brick-and-mortar downturn is expected to continue, according to a report released in April from UBS Securities. Investment bank analysts said 75,000 more stores would need to be shuttered by 2026 if e-commerce “penetration rises from 16% currently to 25%.”

"Amazon is the biggest threat to the retail industry and as such retailers are spending heavily to keep up with Amazon," John Haber, Spend Management Experts CEO, told USA TODAY, noting "this strategy has proved deadly for those retailers that spent themselves straight into bankruptcy."

Brown said there’s been a singling out of big box stores where there used to be two players in each sector.

“We had Dick’s (Sporting Goods) and Sports Authority and lost Sports Authority. We had Borders and Barnes & Noble, we lost Borders,” Brown said. “We’ve seen a narrowing of the big box sector based on the strength of growing online but also on the growing strength of Walmart and Target being able to service those categories for the consumer.”

A decade of store closings

Here's a look at some of the biggest stores that shuttered all or nearly all locations in the 2010s, many of which relaunched an online presence.

Bebe: 180 stores

Women's clothing chain Bebe was part of the 2017 string of closings and closed all of its stores that May. It staved off bankruptcy and remains an online store.

Blockbuster: 1,700-plus stores

The saga of Blockbuster's demise was drawn out for several years. In 2010, the company filed for bankruptcy and was purchased by Dish Network in 2011, which planned to keep most of the 1,700 remaining stores it bought open. By the end of 2014, all corporate stores closed but a few franchise stores stuck it out. After two of the last three U.S. locations in Alaska closed in 2018 and the last store in Australia closed in March 2019, there's only one remaining location of the iconic franchise left worldwide in Bend, Oregon.

Borders: 399 stores

Kmart owned the bookstore chain in the early 1990s before spinning it off into a separate company. At one time, the book retailer operated more than 1,000 stores but lost business with the rise of e-readers like Amazon's Kindle and the growth of discount retailers. In 2011, the chain filed for bankruptcy protection and announced some stores would close but then ended up closing its remaining 399 stores. Borders also operated Waldenbooks, which it also shuttered.

Charlotte Russe: 510 stores

The San Diego-based mall chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early February 2019 and outlined plans to close 94 stores. After not finding a buyer for the remaining stores, the fast-fashion retailer announced in March it would liquidate its 500 stores. Toronto-based clothing manufacturer YM Inc. purchased the Charlotte Russe brand and intellectual property in late March and less than two weeks after the final stores closed, the new owner promoted a comeback. As of Dec. 27, there are 139 new stores, according to the Charlotte Russe website.

Dressbarn: 649 stores

Ascena Retail Group announced the "wind-down" of its Dressbarn stores in May 2019 and closed the last remaining Dressbarn bricks-and-mortar stores closed Dec. 26. New Jersey-based Ascena's other brands include Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Lane Bryant, Catherines and the Justice tween brand and it sold the intellectual property assets of Dressbarn to a subsidiary of Retail Ecommerce Ventures LLC. The brand's new owner plans to launch a new Dressbarn website in early 2020.

Fred's: 568 stores

Discount merchandise retailer and pharmacy chain Fred's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2019 after a series of closings throughout the year. Before the closures, Fred's had 568 stores in 15 states in the southeastern U.S. The fate of Fred's had been shrouded in uncertainty since the company's plans to profit from a mega-merger between pharmacy giants Walgreens Boots Alliance and Rite Aid collapsed in late June 2017 amid federal antitrust concerns.

Gymboree: 749 stores

The children’s clothing retailer was the first victim of 2019 when it announced in January 2019 that it filed for bankruptcy protection and would close both Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores and sell its high-end children’s fashion line Janie and Jack, which had 139 stores. The Children's Place purchased the rights to the Gymboree and Crazy 8 brands for $76 million and is relaunching a new Gymboree.com and a collection in select Children's Place stores in spring 2020. The Gap acquired Janie and Jack for $35 million.

HHGregg: 220 stores

Electronics and appliance retailer HHGregg filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2017 and had initially planed to close 88 stores in 15 states. It ended up closing all of its 220 stores in 19 states. Today HHGregg exists as an online store.

The Limited: 250 stores

The Limited was one of the first retailers to announce mass store closings in 2017 and closed its 250 stores that January. It was formerly a part of L Brands, owner of Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works. Today The Limited is available exclusively at Belk.

Payless ShoeSource: 2,589 stores

The shoe dropped for the Topeka, Kansas-based discount shoe retailer in February 2019 when it announced plans to close its nearly 2,600 stores in the U.S. and Canada and then filed for bankruptcy protection. While all North American locations closed by the end of June, Payless lives on in the U.S. through Amazon, which is selling some of its well-known shoe brands. There also are 750 brick-and-mortar stores in 35 other countries.

Sports Authority: 460 stores

The sporting goods store chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2016 with initial plans to close about 140 stores. After attempting to restructure debt and not finding any buyers in an auction, all 460 stores shuttered in the summer of 2016. Dick's Sporting Goods bought Sports Authority's intellectual property and some leases for $15 million.

Toys R Us: More than 800 stores

Seventeen months after Toys R Us shuttered its last U.S. stores in June 2018, the iconic toy brand’s comeback continued in late November when the new parent company Tru Kids Brands opened its first retail Toys R Us store at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, followed by a second store in Houston, Texas in December. “These stores are fundamentally different from the Toys R Us stores that you’ll remember from the past,” Tru Kids Brands CEO Richard Barry told USA TODAY in October. “They are smaller, very immersive, experimental as well.” The new company also opened two “toy wonderlands” called Toys R Us Adventure in Chicago and Atlanta this year and rolled out a new e-commerce website and partnership with Target.

Wet Seal: 511 stores

Teen retailer Wet Seal filed for bankruptcy protection in February 2017 and closed its remaining 171 stores after closing two-thirds of its stores in 2015, the first time the company filed for bankruptcy. Founded in Newport Beach, California in 1962, it grew from a small swimwear destination to a once popular and profitable chain for trendy teenage clothes and swimsuits. Today, Wet Seal exists online at www.wetseal.com.

NoVA, DC Store Closings By Chain Retailers In 2019 - Patch.com

WASHINGTON, DC — What some have dubbed the ongoing retail apocalypse has changed the landscape of many northern Virginia malls and DC shopping districts in 2019. Several national chains announced store closures this year, which will mean big changes to the way some consumers shop.

A growing list of brick-and-mortar establishments have seen their revenue and popularity plummet with the emergence of e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Walmart. Retailers affected range from clothing stores like Forever 21, Dress Barn and Lord & Taylor, to home accessory chains Pier 21 and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Here are some of the big chains that announced they were closing stores in Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia this year.
