National retailer in bankruptcy closing Destiny USA store - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — Motherhood Maternity at Destiny USA is set to close.

The maternitywear retailer is having a store closing sale now. The store is located on the first level of the mall's Macy's wing.

Motherhood's parent company, Destination Maternity, filed for bankruptcy protection in October and said it would close 183 stores. The company had already closed 27 stores before the filing.

It had 446 locations across several different brand names as of August, according to USA Today.

Regardless of the bankruptcy, January is typically a busy month for store closings at Destiny and other shopping hotspots around the region and the rest of the country. Retailers often assess their store footprints after the busy holiday season and move to close weak stores.

Destiny has already seen one big tenant shut down in 2020. Athletic Apex, the mall’s gym, closed over the weekend.

The mall sued Apex over the summer for back rent and the business owed over $669,000 as of November, according to court records.

Destiny has said it has several new tenant announcements planned for 2020.

Get Air, a chain of indoor trampoline parks, plans to open on the mall’s entertainment-focused third floor at some point this year.

In addition, Levels, an apparel, footwear and accessories retailer, is now open on the second level of Destiny’s expansion section, across from Steve Madden. The new store took over space previously occupied by EbLens, which relocated to the first level near Macy’s.
