Christmas Day is nearly upon us, which can only mean one thing: last-minute Christmas shopping. To help readers plan their retail mission, Newsweek has compiled a list of the opening times for major retailers in the U.S.
According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 56 percent of shoppers expect to make Christmas purchases, or have already done so, between December 18 and Christmas Eve. Out of those shoppers, 59 percent are men.
In December, popular purchases include clothes (49 percent), toys (31 percent) and gift cards (28 percent), according to NRF, with credit cards being the main method of purchase (46 percent).
Are retailers open on Christmas Eve?
Albertsons: The store is expected to be open on Christmas Eve, however, limited hours may apply. Check local stores for more details.
Aldi: According to its website, all stores will be open limited hours on Christmas Eve. The holiday hours for local stores can be found by using the store locator.
Fred Meyer: According to the retailer's website, stores will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily.
Kroger: It is expected that these stores will be open on Christmas Eve, though it is not detailed on its website. Newsweek has reached out to confirm.
Safeway: The superstore is open on Christmas Eve but is operating holiday hours. These differ per store, so check local ones ahead of turning up.
Trader Joe's: The store will close at 6:00 p.m. local time on Christmas Eve, according to its website. So make sure to get your last-minute buys early.
Whole Foods: The health food store is open between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time, according to its website.
Sam's Club: According to its website, Plus members can get early shopping done starting at 7:00 a.m. local time. Club hours for all members start at 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. local time. Holiday shopping hours at 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Newsweek has reached out to the retailer to confirm whether this extends to Christmas Eve.
7-Eleven: Speaking from experience, I know that these stores are open on Christmas Eve (last-minute buys before traveling for Christmas). However, not all of them operate on a 24 hour basis so check local stores for hours.
Costco: According to its website, the warehouses typically operate 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, though these hours might vary for each warehouse. Find a Costco Warehouse using the warehouse finder or download the Costco app on iTunes or Google Play.
Kmart: All stores will be keeping their doors open from 6:00 a.m. on December 20, 2019 until December 24 at 8:00 p.m. local time, according to its website.
Kohl's: Another store operating 24 hours until Christmas Eve, where it will shut its doors at 6:00 p.m. local time, according to the corporate website for the retailer.
Old Navy: Stores will be operating holiday hours, allowing customers to make the most of the one-day shipping service. Order before midday PST today for delivery by December 24. Check local stores for holiday hours.
Publix: Branches will operate holiday hours on Christmas Eve, check local stores for hours.
Sears: Stores will open as normal with people being able to order products from the website up until 3:00 PST on Christmas Eve for same-day pick-up. Most places open at 8:00 a.m. local time and close at 6:00 p.m. local time.
Target: Like last year, the retailer will open at 7:00 a.m. local time and close at 10:00 p.m. local time. Some stores will have their own hours.
Walmart: In 2016, the retailer started shutting store two hours earlier, at 6:00 p.m. local time, to allow people time with their families. This is expected to continue in 2019, but check with local stores ahead of time.
Macy's: Stores will be open until 6:00 p.m. local time. Orders placed online by 3:00 p.m. on December 24 can be picked up in-store before closing.
BJ's Wholesale Club: Wholesalers will open at 8:00 a.m. local time and close at 6:00 p.m. local time, according to the website.
Dollar General: Like last year, stores will open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 10:00 p.m. local time.
Family Dollar: According to its Weekly Ad, stores will be open between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. local time.
CVS Pharmacy: Most stores will operate 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time, but check local branches for more details.
Rite Aid: Stores usually extend their hours for Christmas Eve, however the company hasn't made an announcement across the board. Check local stores for more details.
Walgreens: This store and Duane Reade stores will be open to midnight Christmas Day.
Home Depot: The home store will be open 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. local time, according to the website.
Lowe's: The home improvement store hasn't made a special announcement regarding opening hours, so it is expected that the majority of stores will open 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. ET.
