Lots of things changed on Long Island during 2019. And one of the big changes was to the Island's retail market.
Many big businesses announced closures of Long Island stores this year, which will mean big changes to the way some shop in the area.
Here are some of the big chains that announced they were closing stores in the area this year.
A.C. Moore
In November, craft supply store A.C. Moore announced it was closing all of its stores, including four on Long Island. The chain had stores in Bethpage, Carle Place, Selden and Holbrook. Anthony Piperno, CEO of the chain, said the closures were due to the "headwinds" facing many retailers. Read more.
Forever 21
It late September, clothing retailer Forever 21 announced that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and would be closing more than 11 stores. As part of that, the chain is closing its location in the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, as well as in Garden City and Deer Park. The retailer said it filed for bankruptcy protection as a "deliberate and decisive step to put us on a successful track for the future," according to a letter to customers. Read more.
Pier 1 Imports
In September, Pier 1 also announced it would be closing numerous stores. Though the chain has not yet announced which stores are on the chopping block, it has several locations on Long Island. There are Pier 1 stores in Bohemia, Lake Grove, Bay Shore, Commack, Rocky Point, Huntington Station, Massapequa Park, Riverhead and Freeport. Read more.
Kmart
The once-popular store Kmart continued to close stores in the area in 2019, shuttering two more this year. The Kmart in Farmingville was closed this year, and the store in Bohemia is in the process of shuttering, putting more than 100 people out of work. Read more.
Party City
This year, the Hudson Valley-based Party City announced it would be closing 55 locations. Though the locations weren't announced, the dozen Long Island stores are potential contenders. Read more.
JCPenney
One-time retail giant JCPenney announced another store closure this year. The Long Island location in the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove was shuttered in July. Read more.
Dressbarn
This year, Dressbarn announced it was going out of business. That means it shuttered all 17 of its stores on Long Island. Dressbarn had stores in Carle Place, Centereach, East Northport, Freeport, Hauppauge, Huntington Station, Levittown, Massapequa Park, New Hyde Park, Oceanside, Patchogue, Port Jefferson Station, Riverhead, Shirley, Valley Stream, West Babylong and West Hempstead. Bed Bath & Beyond
In October, home retailer Bed Bath & Beyond announced that it would be closing 60 stores. The retailer has not yet announced which stores will close, but its 11 Long Island locations are possibilities. Read more.
