Makeup Artist Shows Off Gruesome 'Hereditary' Effects Work in Must See Behind the Scenes Photos

If you haven’t yet seen Hereditary, you might want to turn away now.

There’s a good chance pretty much everyone reading this has seen Ari Aster’s Hereditary by now, as it’s been available on home video for over two months, but I again must caution you before we proceed that the photos you’re able to see contain MASSIVE spoilers. They come courtesy of AAFX Studio artist Steve Newburn, who handled the film’s various effects.

Newburn was not only the prosthetic makeup designer for Hereditary‘s gorier bits, but as detailed by the Stan Winston School’s blog, he was also the film’s miniatures supervisor.

Through his Instagram account as well as the AAFX Studio website, Newburn has shared various pieces of concept art as well as behind the scenes photos, mostly highlighting Toni Collette’s insane decapitation scene and the downright harrowing death scene of young star Milly Shapiro, one of the most gruesome and upsetting movie moments of all time.

The Stan Winston School blog detailed, “Steve and his team would also build an animatronic puppet of the family’s thirteen-year-old daughter Charlie for her own decapitation scene, this time by telephone pole. This scene would lead to the makeup team’s biggest challenge on the show. Originally, the car Charlie would ride in was meant to be mounted on a track that would lead it and the animatronic puppet into the telephone pole. But changes meant that the effect would be performed by a fully operational vehicle driving at sixty miles an hour!”

“For the gag, a collapsible inner skull was built. This skull was meant to mirror the damage created on another “Charlie” head that was built to represent the aftermath of the accident. Tests were carried out in the makeup shop using a baseball bat to simulate the telephone pole’s impact. Even without the planned track guiding the car, the effect went off perfectly.”

They (only) used a few frames of it,” Newburn told the site. “It was a little too disturbing.”

Check out the various pieces of concept art and shots of the team’s makeup effects work.
