The region’s 1st Xfinity Retail Store is open for business. Here’s what it offers. - lehighvalleylive.com

If we were to rank the places we least want to visit, a customer service center would probably fall somewhere between the DMV and the hospital.

Comcast had one at 155 Port Murray Road in Mansfield Township, about 15 miles east of Phillipsburg. It’s no longer there, but Comcast didn’t close it. The cable television provider instead reinvented it into something customers might actually enjoy visiting.

The company announced this week that the location is now home to the region’s first Xfinity Retail Store. That might not mean much to most in the Lehigh Valley proper, where Comcast doesn’t offer cable service. But for those who do have the option, including many in Warren County, the retail store aims to be more of a destination than the complaint department.

“The newly renovated, expanded center provides customers an immersive destination to discover and interact directly with the latest Xfinity products and services,” a Comcast statement says. “The opening of new Xfinity stores is part of Comcast’s multi-year strategy to transform the customer experience; the stores provide new and existing customers a place to learn how to optimize their Xfinity services and to address any service needs.”

A quick glance at photos Comcast provided of a typical Xfinity Retail Store’s interior invokes comparisons to an Apple Store. (We do have one of those in the Lehigh Valley, at the Lehigh Valley Mall.) The store’s setup, per the Comcast statement, also seems somewhat similar to that of an Apple Store.

Touted in the statement are trained and knowledgeable sales consultants, flatscreen TVs, interactive iPads and a dedicated seating area for demonstrations of Xfinity products and apps.

Customers can purchase new mobile phones, iPads and Apple Watches or bring their own Apple or Samsung devices (qualifying models) and choose a flexible data plan. Demonstrations of products such as X1, a next-generation video platform, and Discover xFi, a personalized home wi-fi system, are also available at the store. There’s also a Connected Home Zone section that showcases the Xfinity Home security and automation system.

“In addition to the latest mobile devices and top-of-the-line mobile accessories, retail offerings at the store … includes Xfinity Home accessories and other merchandise that complements our services,” the Comcast statement says. “Time-saving features like self-serve bill pay and a queuing system allows customers to explore the store instead of waiting in line for service.”

The new Xfinity Retail Store, the 16th in New Jersey, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
