Thousands of store locations closed in 2019 and in 2020, and more closings are on the way as retailers are continuing to close brick and mortar stores this year. However, so far we have not seen as many large store closings in 2020 but the year has just begun and it’s still early.
Last year retailers like Payless ShoeSource, Gymboree, Dress barn, Walgreens/Rite Aid, Charlotte Russe, Family Dollar and Things Remembered led the way when it came to closings.
Below is a list of some of the retailers that are closing locations in 2020.
The closings of these national retailers will be felt at several midstate shopping centers. The “retail apocalypse” has been going on for several years and unfortunately it won’t stop in 2020 as more stores are expected to close.
Macy’s - 30
Macy’s is closing 30 stores this year including a store at the Harrisburg Mall in Dauphin County and the Nittany Mall in Centre County, according to Business Insider. Macy’s said the department store at the Harrisburg Mall will hold a clearance sale starting in May for about 10 to 11 weeks and will close later this year. The Macy’s opened at the mall along Paxton Street in 2006. It is one of largest department stores in the area and will leave a large vacant three-floor space at the mall.

Pier 1 Imports next to the Olive Garden in the front of the Colonial Commons shopping center along Jonestown Road is closing. It’s not clear when the store on 5104 Jonestown Road in Lower Paxton Township will close. Signs at the store said that the store was closing and everything is on sale.
