Saturday is expected to be the biggest shopping day of the year, rivaling, and even beating, Black Friday crowds.
Dec. 21 is "Super Saturday" and also is known as "Panic Saturday" because it's the last Saturday before Christmas. This year, it's the day before the first night of Hanukkah.
About 147.8 million people, up from 134.3 million last year, plan to take advantage of Super Saturday sales and extended store hours, according to the National Retail Federation’s new survey.
“While many people started holiday shopping early, those who waited until Thanksgiving weekend are feeling the pressure due to the limited number of days this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Matthew Shay, the retail group's president and CEO, said in a statement, noting an "impressive turnout by procrastinators" is expected.

Since 2014, Black Friday has yielded its mantle as the busiest shopping day of the year to Super Saturday. RetailNext, which analyzes traffic and other metrics at brick and mortar stores says that based on historical data and current trends, Super Saturday will again have the highest tally of overall sales.
And while Saturday will be a popular day to shop, don’t expect to find Black Friday-like prices.
Regina Conway, consumer expert from Slickdeals.net, suggests that shoppers who want to avoid crowds should order online and use curbside pickup where available.
"If you’re not sure if it’s a good deal, use your smartphone and check the price on Amazon or Walmart for comparison, where prices are generally some of the lowest," Conway said.
